"Students will enhance their capacity to communicate in various ways—writing, graphics, numeracy, and other visual and oral means—to collaborate effectively with others in group work, and to be competent in appropriate communication technologies."

Communication requires at least two subjects: a speaker, and a listener. It could also involve several speakers and a single listener, like parents scolding their child; or a single speaker and several listeners, like a single parent scolding several of her children.

This term, I learned at least the basics of communication: speaking to an admittedly small group of people, to individuals, and in a group. I learned, how to listen to people.

Right 2 Dream 2 Interviews: 123

Halfway through a research paper, we were assigned a group project on Portland issues. Our group was randomly selected to cover homelessness in Portland. Because each member of the group had highly conflicting schedules, it was critical that we remained in constant contact with each other. Further, we had to effectively organize the vast amounts of information we gathered into a coherent presentation in the form of a PowerPoint. We also had to question a figure in the issue; here, we interviewed Ibrahim Mubarak of Right to Dream Too.

Global Issues, Local Consequences. By the spring term, I felt I knew my fellow students fairly well. What is unique with this group assignment is that my group collaborated on an essay using Google Docs, which can be viewed by clicking here. We also collaborated heavily, despite heavily conflicting schedules, on a light website that gave an abrdiged view on our findings, which can be found here.
